Essential Supplies for Painting Wood Projects: What You Need to Get Started
Painting wood projects is a fun and rewarding craft, and with the right supplies, you can create beautiful, professional-looking pieces with ease! Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced crafter, having the right tools on hand will make your painting process smoother and more enjoyable.
Here’s everything you need to get started on your paintable wood projects!
1. Acrylic Paints
The most important supply—paint! Every project comes with a suggested paint guide, but feel free to use your own colors to make it uniquely yours. I personally love DecoArt acrylics, but any acrylic paint will work well and give you vibrant, long-lasting results.
2. Paint Brushes & Applicators
Different tools create different effects, so I use a mix of:
- Paint Brushes: Any brand will do! Choose a variety of sizes for different details.
- Makeup Wedges: These provide smooth, controlled coverage and prevent paint from bleeding into engraved lines.
3. Adhesives for Assembly
Once your wood pieces are painted, you’ll need to assemble the design. Here are some great options:
- Crafter’s glue, wood glue, or super glue – Any strong adhesive will work!
- Art Glitter Glue – My personal favorite! It dries clear, allows for adjustments before setting, and is easy to clean up.
4. Cleanup & Convenience Supplies
- Baby Wipes & Paper Towels: A must-have for quick cleanups, and I even use baby wipes to blend paint for a soft effect!
- Jar of Water: Essential for rinsing brushes and keeping them fresh during painting.
5. Surface Protection
To protect your workspace, use a vinyl tablecloth to catch any spills or splatters.
6. Clear Spray Sealer (Optional, but Recommended!)
A clear spray sealer helps protect your finished project. If you plan to display your piece outdoors (in a covered area), sealing it will help preserve the paint from wear and weather.
7. A Non-Slip Surface for Small Pieces
Tiny wood pieces can shift while painting, so keeping them stable is key! Here are some handy options:
- Silicone mats (great for kids!)
- DIY Trick: Tape painter’s tape to a piece of cardboard—this holds small pieces in place while you paint!
Ready to Start Painting?
That’s it! You probably already have many of these supplies at home, and gathering the rest will make your crafting sessions easier and more enjoyable. Once you’re stocked up, you’ll be ready to paint whenever creativity strikes!
